jane: the closet hipster.

here's another of my obsessions.
HIPSTERS.
for real. especially men in plaid button ups and glasses. mmmm yes please.
and indie music. i'm rather fond of that.
so, for halloween, i decided to be a hipster (well, originally i was going to be a cat lady with my roommate, but...who knew DI could be so uncooperative??) out came the sock bun and old 3D glasses and skinny jeans and plaid shirt.
*(side note, i texted penelope about my costume and her response was: "haha nice. So          skinny jeans and a scarf? Oh wait. That's what you always wear haha.")
fabulous, no?
you KNOW i will be wearing this to class tomorrow. what UP.
i'm really excited.

also, in response to penelope's post yesterday, i am posting my new indie album.
in short, halloween this year is going to be fabulous.
sincerely,

ps, if you feel like being a hipster yourself, just not so sure how to go about it, watch this tutorial. i found it rather informative.

Mouth guards.. for your feet!

Remember a a while ago, when I posted about how my favorite house shoes happen to be crocs? yup. well, I also wear them out to my pool quite often, and who would of known?.. they shrink in the sun.  Quite a bit...

So trusty google told me to boil them in a pot of water and wear them to stretch them out. I have boiled a lot of mouth guards in my time, so the concept made sense. I tried it.. oh man! love!

Not only do they fit again, but they fit better all over. they don't flop around on my feet like duck feet anymore. marvelous!

So, my dear friends. If you own a pair of crocs that have been caught by the sun, or simply want crocs that feel like custom orthodontics for your feetsies.

dip them in a pot of boiling water for several seconds

Pull them out and CAREFULLY. don't burn your self put them on you feet and walk around

dip them in cold water after they have molded. I stuck them in my tub and ran water with them on.

Enjoy your new custom footwear.

DIY Maxi Dress/Skirt

I've been seeing lots of maxi dress how-to's on pinterest lately, so I decided to be crafty and make one of my own. I was talking to my dear friend Jen and she went with me to the store and helped me pick out and find the right fabric. She's just fabulous.
Belt: Forever 21. Cardigan: Deb
I decided to just make it up as I go, because I didn't like a lot of the patterns that I had found. I am very pleased with how it turned out.
Disregard the wind.
First, I bought a yard and a half of jersey knit at Joann's (such a glorious store).
Second, fold the fabric in half hot dog style and pin down the open side at a diagonal, so the top fits snugly around your upper bust area (what is that even called?) or around your waist if you are making a skirt.
Third, sew down the line of pins, taking them out as you move down. You could cut away the fabric first (I didn't), just make sure to leave a seem allowance of at least a 1/4 inch.
Fourth, check it out. Try it on. Make sure it fits how you want it to.
Fifth, Cut off excess material. I didn't do this earlier because I am prone to making mistakes and wanted leeway just in case. Turns out I didn't need to unpick or anything this time, so I could have just cut off the fabric earlier.
Sixth, make a hem at the top, just to make it look nicer. You really don't need on at the bottom, especially as it is a jersey knit and won't fray.
And that's it my friends. I added a belt and a cardigan to make it more flattering and modest. Also, I can fold mine down and it looks fabulous as a skirt as well.

Summer Favorites

Alice- Summer Wishlist

Summer may only have a couple more months, but here is what has past my eyes ever since school got out. I think they are all gorgeous, but if I had to pick just one item I would pick the dress. I fell head over heals with it. What are your favorites?

Keira Knightly Milkmaid Braid

My hair is at a super awkward stage of life, as I am trying to decide to chop it into a pixie again or grow it. So I got really excited when I came across pictures of this gorgeous milkmaid updo. My hair is totally long enough for that!
Super duper easy, and really cute! It can be altered slightly to work for almost all lengths of hair, and would be a fabulous second day hair style.

Thrifty Nifty Find

Sometimes I go to Savers.
Sometimes it's awesome.
Sometimes it's not.
When I went yesterday, it would be of the former. I was looking for a hoodie to do a little DIY. I didn't find such a hoodie, but I found an awesome sweatshirt instead!!
Sweatshirt: Thrifted. Shorts: Charlotte Russe. Awkwardness: my own.

Really, what's with my arms?
Disregard the awkward garbage can and bike in the background. I didn't realize they were there and I am too lazy to go retake pictures. So deal. Also, the awkward unphotogenicness that is me...
Just pay attention to the sweater. Which I adore.
Anyways, thrift on, my friends.

(P.S. Don't worry. I WILL find a hoodie worthy of a DIY. Along with many more things.)

DIY Beach Dress Cover Up

Victoria Secret offers a cute, simple beach dress cover up for around $40. Yikes! and as a tall girl I wanted something that would be a little less revealing on my frame. this is what I came up with.

Here's how I did it. super easy. took me less than 20 minutes.

Step One: Fabric
I used a yard of a knit stretch cotton. The cotton makes it absorbant and comfortable to wear over a wet swim suit.
Step Two: Straps.
I cut off about two inches from the bottom of my fabric to sew the straps. you could cut less and sew the straps and turn them out to make the hidden seam straps, but I took the easy way out and folded the two edges of the stirp to the middle and then in half and sewed down the one side.
Step Three: Arm Holes
Cut the top two corners off of the fabric. I did a rounded shape rather than going straight across. I made mine a little too big, so you may want to hold it up to you and check how much of an arm hole you need.
Step four: put it together.
Sew the straps to the two corners you created by cutting out the arm holes. I sewed the straps on the back and but it on and then pinned them to the front at a length I liked.
Step Five: optional
To finish I cut the botom corners off so I wouldnt have a sharp corner visable in the front. I just rounded the edge.

Happy Crafting!
